Gennifer Choldenko’s author’s note tells the reader that the staff did live on the island with their spouses and children. Students can apply their knowledge of autism to Natalie and see which characteristics she exhibits and decide whether or not she fits the diagnosis. Moose Flanagan lives on Alcatraz Island because his dad is a prison guard. Moose is amazed by how hard his mom tries to help Natalieshe seems to stop at nothing in hopes that something will help her daughter. Purdy to let Natalie stay, but the schools pretty insistent that she needs to go home. Once at the school, Mooses mom tries to ask Mr. Natalie has what would now be diagnosed as autism, so an investigation into what autism is and how it affects both autistic individuals and their families would be a good lesson idea. The family went through a really tough time after that. These websites provide author background and activities/questions for discussion.
